1/ Lựa chọn đúng loại công cụ

Trước khi mua, bạn nên xem qua các hướng dẫn sử dụng để xem nó có phù hợp hay không. Việc mua những loại dụng cụ này tương đối tốn kém nhưng nó là đầu tư xứng đáng
2/ Học cách sử dụng các dụng cụ
Bạn có thể có thể tất cả các dụng cụ cần thiết, nhưng không biết sử dụng như thế nào sẽ làm cho việc thực hiện dự án trở nên khó khăn hơn rất nhiều. Trên thực tế các dụng để làm rất đơn giản để biết cách sử dụng (tua vít vặn, búa, máy khoan, máy cắt, thước đo, dụng cụ gá kẹp,…), chỉ những loại dụng cụ hoặc máy mọc đặc biết thì mới cần phải học cách sử dụng. Nhưng điều quan trọng là cần phải biết sử dụng như thế nào để đảm bảo được sự an toàn cho cho người dùng
3/ trang phục bảo vệ
Sẽ không có DIY và không có sản phẩm nảo được tạo ra nếu như bạn bị chấn thương. Có những rủi ro tiềm ẩn dẫn đến chấn thương do các thiết bị nguy hiểm tạo ra hoặc cho các chất được tạo ra (khói, tia lửa điện, mùi hôi, ánh sáng,..). Khi hàn cắt cần phải có kính bảo hộ, găng tay, tạp dề, dày kín. Khẩu trang sẽ cần cho các trường hợp khi sơn, cắt gỗ,… Trước khi bắt tay vào làm cần phải đảm bảo tất cả các trang phục bảo hộ yêu cầu
4/ Tìm một nơi an toàn và chứa dụng cụ
Lựa chọn một căn phòng trống hoặc sân sau để làm DIY. Lựa chọn không gian ưa thích ích nhất phải là tránh các tai nạn xảy ra cho trẻ em, thú nuôi. Đảm bảo sàn không bị ẩm ướt và thông thoáng, không có mùa hôi để có thể làm việc lâu dài. Nơi an toàn để chứa các dụng cụ cần phải khô ráo: hộp toolbox, giá treo, kệ để dụng cụ và nên ghi đầy đủ các nhãn để dễ dàng tìm thấy các dụng cụ nhanh chóng nhất.
5/ Có kiến thức về dự án DIY
bạn nên biết mục tiêu tổng thể của dự án. Cùng cần phải biết cần làm gì để hoàn thành nó. Một số dự án lớn yêu cầu một bản kế hoạch: phát thảo, đo lường, tính toán. Cần phải có kiến thức dự án sẽ làm: kiến thức về điện, kiến thức về cơ khí, vật liệu,…
